Why do men grow a
beard?
Beard-less people believe that a beard is
nothing more than a facial feature. Still,
anyone who can grow a decent amount of hair on
their face knows that after a while your beard
becomes a part of who you are; a part of your
identity. Those who are still skeptical should
look closer at several studies claiming that
bearded men project more confidence. Even if
you don’t have time to go through the volumes
of data, it’s fine, a lot of these self-esteem
boosters are quite obvious. With this in mind,
here are five reasons why bearded men project
more confidence.
1. Social Status
In many different cultures throughout
history, the beard represented social status
for the one wearing it. We are not talking
about the lazy outcome of not shaving for too
long, but about a well-groomed full-beard.
Some of these ideas have survived through to
the present day. We all know that in most
lines of work, cutting your beard short is
mandatory, so having a full beard demonstrates
that one is financially independent and
confident enough not to worry about these
mainstream standards.
2. Wisdom and
Maturity
The Ancient Greek Culture recognized the
beard as a symbol of wisdom and maturity. Most
Greek city-states didn’t have a specific age
defined for when a boy became an adult so once
a boy was able to grow a proper man’s beard,
he would no longer be considered a boy. Even
today, in some cultures and institutions this
legacy has survived, for example, one of the
oldest units in the French Foreign Legion, Les
Pioneers de la Légion étrangère, the men are
required to wear beards. This speaks of the
respect they command from the rest of the army
and the vital role they play in maintaining
the tradition of this branch of the French
army.
3. Women Find
Bearded Men Attractive
Perhaps one of the most alluring reasons
why bearded people have more confidence is the
fact that they are greatly favored by the
opposite sex. Most research shows that there
is something about men with beards that women
find irresistible. Some claim it is simply a
physical feature that is pleasing to the eye,
others that it has to do with a projection of
manliness while there are those who claim that
men with beards are simply better genetic
material. Be as it may, an average woman is
much more likely to lose sleep over the
question, does he like me?, if the man in
question has a very solid beard.
4. Men with
Beards Are Manlier
No matter how far we’ve come as a species,
one thing is undeniable – men with beards look
manlier. For some, it represents a symbol of
just how much they have changed since puberty,
for others it is just another thing to feel
proud of. The fact that some of the greatest
figures in human history and fiction, such as
Abe Lincoln, Chuck Norris and even Gandalf the
Grey also wore great beards probably also has
something to do with this idea.
5. Growing a Beard
Takes Patience
Finally, people with beards really do have
something to be proud of. Growing a real manly
beard takes time and dedication. When you
first start growing, the stubble itch might be
unbearable, then comes the patchy growth,
choosing your beard style. Months and months
will go by where you may be tempted to just
shave it all, but the very fact that you have
persevered, stuck it out and now have a great
beard, is testament to your patience and
dedication. Therefore, it would be safe to
assume that this confidence boost is more than
earned.
Conclusion
As you can see, the reasons why bearded
men feel more confident are many! The most
important one, however, is a fact that beards
simply look awesome and just knowing that your
best feature is out there for the whole world
to see really feels amazing!
